Tour de Fleece starts today!

The Tour de Fleece, a fabulous event where spinners create yarn coinciding with the Tour de France, starts today!

This Tour de Fleece started in 2006 on the blog, Keep on Knitting in the Free World. This year, the Tour de Fleece starts today and runs until Sunday July 22nd, 2012.

Guidelines (NOT RULES):

  1. Spin every day the Tour rides, if possible. Saturday June 30th through Sunday July 22nd. Days of rest: Tuesday July 10th and Tuesday July 17th. (Just like the actual tour.)
  2. Spin something challenging on the challenge day (usually the toughest high mountain stage: this year, it’s Stage 16, on Wednesday, July 18).

I’ve joined two teams this year, with different goals for each.

Team Footloose is running over on the Hansen MiniSpinner board. My goal there is to spin fractal yarns and to exercise. Good goals. I’ve even got a project in my head for the yarns created. I’m going to make Anemone hats for the kids in the family. I’ve chosen 8oz of falkland from an old delivery of Spunky Eclectic’s club fiber.

Team Russian Underpants is a little more loosely formed. Since I don’t have room to set up my Canadian Production Wheel right now, I’ve committed to learning to spin on a supported spindle, I can either finish the Yak I’ve been learning on, or spin some cashmere cloud that I’ve been saving. I have two Russian style spindles from The Spanish Peacock, and a Tibetan style supported spindle from Neal Brand that I can work with. The ultimate goal is to spin a little bit, every day until I’m confident that I’ve got this supported spindle thing down.

Are you going to spin during the tour? Come on and join us!
